As I sit down to write this, I feel nervous to admit that for the past couple of weeks, I’ve been stuck in a space of feeling a little bit lost and unable to find my mojo!
Yes, even I can get days like this. It can feel like someone’s taken over my mind and then suddenly I’m sliding down towards the edge and struggling to hang on. But the good news is that these days, getting back up is a much faster process than it once was.
When I feel this way, my inner critic who berates me for the way I look and tells me I’m not good enough gets louder and louder and the longer I listen to her, the further I veer away from the path I want to be on.
It’s so easy to stop trying when you feel low. It’s so common. BUT despite my ‘monkey mind’ trying it’s hardest to push me off course, there are some simple steps that I always come back to which get me back on track quickly.
Simple steps to get back on track
So if, right now, you’re feeling stuck and overwhelmed and lack motivation, these are my go-to tools to get back on track. They might seem really simple but they are powerful! Are you ready?
- Take time out
Give yourself the gift of time to yourself. Allow yourself time to rest and do things that you want to do and don’t need to do. And don’t feel guilty about it! You deserve this time.
- Eat well
It’s tempting to go for the high sugar and high carb foods when you’re feeling low on energy. However, treating yourself with whole foods, high in good fats, proteins and vitamins will boost your energy in a more sustainable way. On a psychological level, it’ll show your inner self that you love and care about her in the same way your mum or your gran might have show their love for you by giving you hot soup, packed with vegetables when you were poorly as a child.
- Get out into nature
When we feel low, it can be tempting to stay inside and hide away from the world. Get outside into the fresh air and feel the wind against your skin and breath in the fresh air. You will feel an instant sense of wellbeing. Take a moment to feel the ground under your shoes and notice the birds or the flowers or the trees. Connecting with nature has been proven to help with anxiety and depression, not least because the physical exercise of walking will immediately cause your sertatonin levels to rise.
- Get your thoughts out onto paper
Instead of allowing your thoughts to swim around in your brain and gather momentum, get them out by writing them down. Just the action of journalling your thoughts is symbolic in cleansing them out of your mind, leaving you free to replace them with more uplifting thoughts. Ask yourself, how can I reach for a thought that will make me feel good? Would you feel good if you remembered the day your child was born or perhaps your wedding day? What lights you up when you think about it?
- Take a shower everyday and make an effort to get ready for the day
As difficult as it might feel to embrace this action, it will make such a difference to the way you feel if you push through and overcome your resistance to it. It can feel so easy to vegitate on the couch and ignore your usual routine, but you need to send a signal to your subconscious that YOU are the one in control and not your inner critic. So, by taking the reins and sticking to your routine, not only will you feel fresh, you will feel more motivated and empowered.
- Practice silent time
Try and limit the time you spend stimulating your brain on social media feeds. Instead, try and use this wasted time improving your inner connection by sitting in silence. You can do this by meditating or by simply closing your eyes and focusing on your breathing. You could set a timer and give yourself permission to embrace silence with no interruptions.
- Stay hydrated
Water is one of your biggest allies when you feel low on energy and motivation. Deydration not only depletes your physical energy but also your mental energy. Drinking a glass of water every hour or two will be one of the best ways you can care for yourself.
- Reconnect to your goals
Take out a piece of paper or your journal and write down your goals; exactly WHY you want to achieve them and the reasons WHY they ARE possible for you. Doing this daily will reignite the flame that may have temporarily gone out when it comes to feeling motivated.

- Acknowledge your achievements
All too often we focus on the things we haven’t achieved, and pay very little attention to the things we have accomplished. Take a few minutes to write down the things you are most proud of yourself for and celebrate them! It could be that you showed a random act of kindness to a stranger. This is what makes you amazing! Start paying attention to these things and eventually it will become second nature to focus on the good, rather than the bad.
- Take baby steps
It’s OK to slow down once in a while. Your brain, as well as your body, needs the rest. However, to regain any momentum you may have lost, set yourself 2 tasks for the day to start off with and then build on this each day, whithout overhwelming yourself. Now these do NOT have to be difficult. They could be as simple as having a shower or taking the rubbish out. The point is that you make a commitment to do them and then tick them off when they’re done. The act of completing the tasks you set out to do will give you a small hit of seratonin (the happy hormone) which comes from feeling as though you’ve achieved something.
You get to choose how you feel!
You can make a choice to feel better now. You don’t have to feel stuck! You are in control. If you want to change how you deal with situations going on around you, you can! Turn to the steps above and throw yourself into them. Do the work and you will see a rapid change in how you feel. But I know it can sometimes feel too hard which is why I encourage you to do ONE thing today. Then something new tomorrow.
Consistency is everything. Do something that makes you feel good every day and the accumative effect will see you rise from the ashes and fly!
